1. Q: If I have a protocol that needs review, but doesn't involve children but does involve child health staff what committee should I submit it to for scientific review and hospital impact? A: The mandate of the Child Health Scientific Review Committee is to review any protocols that involve child health patients and staff. This includes all child health staff even if the actual research is not being done on site within the Calgary Health Region.

Q: How many copies of a proposal are required when submitting a protocol for review?
A: 4 copies and the original are
required.

Q: How can I tell if I qualify for expedited review? A: The CHREB expedited review policy is available on the Office of Medical Bioethics website ( http://www.fp.ucalgary.ca/medbioethics/download.html ). Please note that it is at the discretion of the Chair of the Child Health Scientific Review Committee whether the project meets the criteria. The CHREB can also send the project back to the Scientific Committee requesting a full scientific review if they do not feel the project meets the expedited criteria.

Q: I had submitted my application to an internal competition (i.e. ACH Foundation Research Grant) but was not awarded a grant. However, I would still like to continue with the study. How do I ensure that my project continues to go through the review process? A: You will need to notify the Child Health Research Office that you wish to continue with your study. You will need to secure alternate funding and have addressed the grant reviewers' concerns that were provided to you. Once that has been completed, forward the letter confirming the funding for your study and your response to the concerns to the Child Health Research Office so that they may resume the review procedure on your study.

Q: I have been notified by Research and Trust Accounting that the grant I received from an ACH internal competition is expiring and my account will be closed. Can I extend the 1-year grant that I have been awarded? A: Yes, the 1-year award can be extended another year. We understand that sometimes studies can go beyond the 1 year time frame due to unforeseen circumstances or delays. You will need to provide a letter to the Child Health Research Office containing the following information:
Title of the Study
Principal Investigator's Name, Department/Division and Site
Ethics/Grant ID number
U of C Account number
Which competition you received the grant from
Reason why you need an extension of the study
